And probably is, too.  Price is right if it's been rebuilt.  Worth a phone call at least for anyone interested in Merc power.

That's a racing 10 hp. Suitable for only the smallest boats.

Having 2 nice original KG7's, me thinks that motor is a "touch" on the high side and missing a good amount of the valuable parts and has the wrong powerhead.

It's a good Rat Rod motor for a hydroplane.  Eagle would kill himself with all the Mercury Power. :)

It's not a mark 10. It's a 1950-1951 Mercury KG7 Super 10 Hurricane tower with what looks like a Mark 25 powerhead.    It's a 20HP powerhead.

Damn,,Dan knows his motors !!! Dan, if the statement you made is correct, I'm guessing at least a few people are pooling their funds. I imagine around next week this time that motor will be sitting on my my front porch,,,origination unknown..

My Model R alumacraft weights in at 139lbs empty.  With My Mercury Mark 25, the boat goes close to 30mph with that same powerhead and a normal shifting Mark 25 lower unit.

On your firefly, you'd be lucky to plane out the boat... My 1946 Merc would be better suited for you...

In all seriousness, with a KG7H or Q  on your boat, you'd get in the high 30's and it would flat out fly. With a Mark 20H, it would be ridiculous. Your boat was made for one of the Merc race motors with a quicky lower unit.  In fact, it probably had one in the 1950's with a previous owner.

I have a KG-7, and a couple KH-7 Merc's. I am not an expert on Merc's, but the gearcase looks like a standard "fishing motor" gearcase, and not a racing Quickie.

Not to rain on anybody's parade, but the last Merc I saw on a Feather Craft sat on a trailer for 4 hours while the entire aluminati tried to get it to run. Last I knew, it is still idle.
Hard to get high 30's if you don't get on the water.

Yep it dont have the stiletto 1 to 1 gearcase! Thats the mega speed lower end! Theyre rare, and expensive.

Correct, standard KG7 gearcase, not quickie.

And, with a KG7 fishing tower with a Mark 25 powerhead, you have about 3/8" of the driveshaft engaging in the powerhead.  The better combination is a KE7 tower (shorter) with a mark 25 or 28 Powerhead.  Same gearing and more driveshaft engagement in the powerhead.

Merc gets a bad rap because OMC motors are so easy to work on.  My dos dozen Mercs have never let me down.  You do need some experience with them and some special tools, but they are not hard to work on with basic engine building skills. They still need spark, compression and fuel just like the OMC's.

It's the Ford vs Chevy debate over again, but on the water...

The Mark 25 power head on the KG7 gear case should be fine, it is the Mark 28 power head that will give you problems with not catching enough spline, been there done that. My Mercs are some of the most reliable motors I own in my entire collection and they are the ones I have the most fun with on the water. They are also the ones I enjoy working on the most, gotta love the challenge and the reward.

I see he polished the hell out of it. Must be reading this forum. Polishing is a bizarre symptom that only can be kept under control by handcuffing the offender.......

That's not polish. That's cheap chrome spray paint...  It should be painted dull aluminum...

I'd have a hard time paying $200 for that motor, let alone his asking price. However, the deadman's throttle is worth the $150 if it's complete. :)

I admire the motor so much but it pales in comparison to the obvious....

You are a Great Dad to those two boys. My hat is off to you Sir.

Keep em on the water!

Here's are a few that I run, Mark 28 power head on an H tower with a 1:1 gearcase  . Yes, they are very expensive. I also have a Mark 28 rat motor, it is a Mark 28 powerhead on a KE7 tower with KG7 clamps, the tower has been shortened along with a shortened and rewelded drive shaft. It runs a stock gear case that has been modified. They are both screamers, also have a 20H. Speed is just a question of time and money. The KG4H is going on a new to me lighter 10 ft. race boat I'm buying tomm.  The first 2 pics are of the rat motor mod lower and the next two are the real deal.

Ken,

I enjoy your boats and motors, but more importantly, you are the only person I know who can polish a boat to a mirror finish in one day.  If you ever want to hire out your services for Beer, I'll drop off my R at your house and keep you from getting thirsty. :)

Thanks for the compliment Dan. If we were closer I'd help ya out for beer no problem!

You are right on the money with your Mark 25 on your R. That is the best top speed I got out of my R with a Mark 25 on it as well. It can get a little hairy on the R at that speed if you are hanging onto a tiller. Is your boat a little bounce happy at speed?

I'm getting a deck!  If I put my 80lb kid in the front seat, it runs smooth.  With me running by myself with a tiller, it's a touch scary.  Add to the fact I'm left handed and not coordinated enough to drive right handed, it's a wild ride.

I think a Mark 28 with a center steer deck should solve my issues...

Heck, if you'll polish for beer, I'll take a couple of days off and pay you a visit back east.

I look forward to see the reports of your new boat with the 28H!
